What to Expect

An Estimate to re-stain the fence of a corner lot in a neighborhood with HOA requirements to match color to the original stain.

This will require 5 days to complete

Day 1      Cleaning        8-10 hours

The cleaning process is more extensive on previously stained fences and does require access to an outside water supply. I will need to hook up a hose to rinse the fence off after it has been scrubbed and treated for stain preparation.

Day 2         Drying      24-48 hours      (without rain)

The fence will appear dry after a couple of hours but will not be dry all the way through. The stain I use is oil based and absorbs deep into the wood providing a water barrier and shielding the fence from UV rays.  If the moisture content of the fence is greater than 13% the stain will not properly adhere to the wood.

If you have a sprinkler system, I ask that you turn it off while the fence is drying.

Day 3             Staining         10-12 hours

I will return to test the moisture content of the fence and begin application of the stain. I use a 4” brush to completely work the stain into the wood fibers and can cover about 15-18 panels in 1 day.

Day 4      Staining         10-12 hours

I will continue staining the fence and should be able to complete the work by sundown on the 4th day.

Day 5 Final Touches 1-4 hours

I will assess the work after it has set overnight, making any and all final improvements. The Stain I use (Wood Defender) has a slow cure rate. It may take up to 90 days for the product to fully cure, depending on the climate and UV exposure. The product is waterproof after a few hours of application.
